Located near Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape province, Addo Elephant National Park is South Africa’s third-largest wildlife reserve. It was established in 1931 to protect a fragile population of just eleven wild elephants that had survived local hunting. Today, it stands as a celebrated conservation success story, housing hundreds of these gentle giants alongside a rich variety of terrestrial wildlife including lions, buffaloes, rhinos, and leopards. The park spans diverse landscapes, stretching from the semi-arid Karoo inland through the Zuurberg Mountains and dense evergreen thicket, all the way down to a pristine coastal marine reserve. Because its boundaries extend into the Indian Ocean to encompass coastal islands populated by penguins, gannets, whales, and great white sharks, Addo uniquely offers sanctuary to the “Big Seven”. Its malaria-free environment and varied ecosystems make it one of Africa’s most accessible and ecologically rich safari destinations.
